Central Government: Hallmark mandatory for gold jewellery - imprisonment on violation!

The Central Government has announced that the gold jewellery items must be sold only with Hallmark seal from 1st January 2021.

In order for complete implementation of this order, 1-year duration has been given for registering in the Bureau of Indian Standards (Indian Standard Institute).

The full official announcement will be made on this will be released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs next year!

Once the order is released, only Hallmark sealed 14, 18, and 22 karat gold jewellery can be sold. Any violation may result in Penalty and 1-year imprisonment will occur.

Accordingly, those who buy gold jewellery items after 15th January next year (2021) will have to check and confirm the BIS Hallmark seal, karat level, and the centre and the jewellery seal.

Presently, there are 892 Hallmark Evaluation and issue of Seal centres in 234 districts throughout the country. As of now, 28849 jewellery shops have already registered with them.

Any violation will invite a penalty from Rs. 1 Lakh or 5 times the value of the Gold Jewellery item bought. Further, 1-year imprisonment will also be imposed. This was shared by a BIS official.

What is Hallmark?
Hallmark indicates the quality of gold and has 5 different seals. Hallmark seal has BIS Seal, seal confirming the purity of gold by the concerned centre, year of manufacture of the jewellery item, the seal of the jewellery shop will all be there.
