A proposal was made by Ennore based Kamarajar Port Trust to develop an industrial park in Ennore is known. This has been rejected now by the EAC or union environment ministry’s expert appraisal committee.
The truth is EAC recently directed Ennore Port to re-design the proposal. This was done after referring to the pending court cases, violations and attempt to establish chemical and pharma industries at eco-sensitive zones etc. For the sake of reducing logistic costs, it is important that industrial units are located near the port. The proposal by Kamarajar Port Trust to develop an industrial park was one of the 14 coastal employment units or CEU in India.
Important information is CEU in Chennai was expected to bring an investment f Rs 1750 crores in 2029 and provide jobs to 30000 people. It must be noted that the said CEU was proposed on 326 acres land at a cost of Rs217 crores and it would have metallurgical, chemical fertilizer, petro-chemical based and synthetic organic chemical industries that fall under category A of EIA or Environment Impact Assessment. There are agricultural cropland, mangrove forests plus scrubland and water bodies inside 10km radius of the site through the project land is largely barren.
