The water body that was once a major water resource for the residents belonging to Tiruvottriyur is now in poor condition. We are now talking about Chitra Kulam, a water body that is located just near the Tiruvottriyur Bridge. This waterbody has deteriorated to a huge extent and the presence of algae, weeds and silt formation etc has confirmed this.
Many decades back, the residents of Tiruvottriyur and Sathangadu had used this water body Devi Kulam for their drinking water requirements are known. It must be noted that this water body has been neglected and the water has become contaminated. The groundwater recharge wells have been affected by this and the residents depend on the metro water tankers in the summertime.
A resident belonging to the nearby railway colony spoke about how this neglected water body must be atleast 5 decades old and how the pond was bigger than it looked.
He explained that the water body has been bifurcated by the Ennore High Road and there is no culvert beneath it. He added that the water was supposed to flow into the Buckingham canal but the absence of culvert made it overflow and enter railway colony.
The ecosystem of this water body has been spoiled by the encroachments of bunds and garbage dumping etc. It was later revealed by another resident that this Devi Kulam has been the place for the breeding of mosquitoes. The corporation needs a ‘No Objection Certificate’ or NOC from railways for the sake of restoring this water body.
