The news that both the units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project have come to standstill leading to a shortfall of 1000 MW for Tangedco or Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation has been the topic of discussion for many now.

In the month of December in 2019, unit- 2 had stopped power generation is known. The truth is unit-2 is yet to resume its work.

A technical snag has led to the stopping of the first unit on Tuesday. 50 percent of the power generated at the Kudankulam power plant is supplied to TN.

It was later revealed by a senior official belonging to Tangedco that till a few days back 300 MW from Unit one was received. He then explained that there has been a lack of communication from the plant about the real issue and the time of resumption of generation. He added that Tangedco did not take the supply from Kudankulam into consideration for planning.

In 2019-20, Unit -2 generated 3641 million units of power and unit-1 generated 5586 million units and this was as per NPCIL or Nuclear Power Corporation of India. Compared to other power units in India, Kudankulam units have been performing below par.

It is important to mention that 4 units in Kaiga have a capacity factor of not less than 90 % and some have crossed 100 % also but the capacity factor of Kudankulam Unit 1 is 80 % and Unit 2 is 50%. There has been a surge in the power demand in TN since 1st February with peak demand around 14,500 MW.
