It has been two decades since Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has laid the foundation for the flyovers in Chennai.
The news that has come out is GCC is laying foundation for the purpose of building flyovers at congested places in Chennai. To build grade separators at a cost of Rs 1500 crores approximately, GCC had submitted a proposal to the state government. The point is last time the flyovers were built by the corporation was during the mayor ship of Mr. M.K. Stalin. The corporation officials are now hoping that the government would give approval to the proposal submitted by GCC.
The funds for the grade separators (that do not need any land acquisition) would be sanctioned initially and others would be taken up over next few years. This was as per some sources belonging to government. Important piece of information is Chennai has got the lower ratio of flyover/grade separator to regular city roads in comparison with cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata etc. It is worthy to note that Chennai city has got the third highest two wheeler population.
Information collected is consultant played an important role in the detailed study and the 15 locations were priority intersection points selected after this study.
Various important locations selected were Kilpauk, Velachery, Basin Bridge, R.A. Puram, Teynampet and Ayanavaram etc. The projects could be executed quickly at lesser cost and the flyovers would be short. It was brought out by an official that there might be multiple stacks of roads one above other for reducing land acquisition costs.
