Till now, the FC or Fitness Certificate renewal for commercial vehicles has been done once every year.  The point is TN had decided to allow the commercial vehicles to undergo FC renewal once in 2 years up to 8 years. It must be noted that after 8 years one year renewal would be issued to the vehicles. This would provide huge amount of relief for the transporters. The commercial transport operators have appreciated this change to the Motor Vehicles Rules.

To implement 2 years fitness certificate, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989. It is worthy to note that for vehicles up to eight years old, FC is t be renewed every 2 years and for vehicles above 8 years old FC should be renewed every one year. In the year 2018, the ministry has proposed the change.

On 13th February 2020, the transport commissioner wrote to National Informatics Centre, Chennai to make necessary arrangements in VAHAN website for the renewal of FC for the commercial vehicles. It is now said that this amendment would be applicable to all transport vehicles including government buses, private buses and lorry’s etc.

Section of truckers has welcomed the change as they need not pay bribes for the renewal of their FCs at the RTO’s. It was later revealed by a truck owner how getting FC was not easy and how Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 per vehicles was given as bribe amount to the concerned officials.
