Approval to set up parking facility for 1.25 Lakhs vehicles

The Greater Chennai Corporation has approved a project as per the Integrated Vehicle Management Project to set up parking arrangements for 1.25 Lakhs vehicles in Chennai Metro City with the main objectives of reducing the acute traffic congestion and to improve the vehicle parking facilities.
A new traffic management system, ‘Integrated Transport Management’ System is proposed and would be implemented in Chennai Metro City under the ‘Smart City’ Project.
During the 1st Phase of this project, this has been implemented in Theagaraya Road and Prakasam Road in T Nagar.
Contract has been given to 2 companies to execute this project.
Accordingly, parking space has been allotted on road-sides. The parking charges will be Rs. 20 per hour for 4-wheelers and Rs. 5 per hour for parking 2-wheelers.
Of the parking charges collected as above for 4-wheelers at Rs. 20 per hour, Rs. 10.50 would go to the contract company. And the balance to Greater Chennai Corporation.
In the next stage, this is all set to be implemented in 4 more roads shortly. Accordingly, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Avenue Roads in Anna Nagar and Nungambakkam Khader Nawaz Khan Road are the roads where it will be carried out.
The project will be extended to other places as it progresses.
GCC has given approval to 2 companies on contract to provide the parking space in the Chennai Metro City for 1.25 Lakhs vehicles. The project will be taken up in succession.
Greater Chennai Corporation Chief Engineer Nandakumar informed on this: ‘This project has been started for the 1st ever a time in this country. Once this is implemented, the present hardship of vehicles being parked in a haphazard and random manner will be eliminated totally. Moreover, as CCTV cameras are set up in the parking area, the safety of the vehicle will be ensured.
In this plan, a new App, ‘GCCV Smart Parking’ is in action! Through this, the nearest parking space wherever you are going can be located. As such, the parking space can be booked in advance. This project will be expanded and extended to all roads in Chennai Metro City.
