With the better harvest of vegetable and fruits and hence transportation of larger quantity of vegetables to the Chennai Metro City, there has been a substantial reduction in the prices of vegetables and fruits, even in the retail shops.
Around 350 to 400 truckloads of vegetables and fruits are transported every day from other stated as well as other districts in Tamil Nadu to the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale fruits and vegetable market.
In this situation, as a reflection of the good harvest of these items and larger quantity being transported to Chennai, the prices of fruits and vegetables have come down considerably in Chennai as compared to last week.
The Chennai Metro City Koyambedu Traders’ Association Advisor Soundararajan shared in this regard:
Over 75% of a lot of vegetables and fruits transported to Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market are from other states including Andhra! As the harvest has been better and the yield has been more, the quantity of vegetables transported has increased substantially! So, the prices of most vegetables and fruits have reduced substantially in both the wholesale and retail markets.
Especially. Broad beans (avarai) which were sold at Rs. 50 per kg last week, is now sold at Rs. 30 per kg this week! In a similar trend, the price of beans has come down by Rs. 20, carrot and green chilli by Rs, 15. The price of big onion and okra (lady’s finger) has come down by Rs. 10.

Large onion 30 (40), Potato 25 to 30 (no change), carrot 35 (up to 50), chowchow 15 to 20 (30), beetroot 20 to 25 (30), Cabbage 12 to 15 (20), green chilli 15 (30), ginger 70 (80), yam 25 to 30 (40) brinjal 30 to 35 (40), Ladies finger (vendai) 30 (40), broad beans 30 (50), drumstick 120 (no change), tomato 18 to 20 (no change), cauliflower per piece 30 (no change), peerkangai 35 (40), bottle gourd (suraikkai) 20 to 25 (30), small (sambar) onion 40 to 50 (45 to 55).
Fruits
Just as in the case of vegetables, the quantity of arrival of fruits has also increased considerably! Because of this, the price of some fruits has come down quite substantially.
The fruits Kamala, orange, and sweet lime (sathukudi) which were sold at Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 per kg last week, are now sold at Rs. 35 to Rs. 45 per kg.
The price of pineapple has also come down and sold at Rs. 10 less per kg. at Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 per kg. Prices of other fruits have also reduced substantially.
Presently, it is the season for seedless grapes and jackfruit! The season for watermelons has already commenced! Next in line is the season for mangos.
However, the traders observed that there is scope for the prices of fruits to increase only!
