The premier public sector telecom undertakings, Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) have appealed to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and emphasised that they must be exempted from the regulations pertaining to minimum prices.

The appeal mentions:

The advent of large private sector undertakings like Jio and the sensational, bold, and attractive4 offers and concessions with huge discounts has severely affected the public sector undertakings BSNL and MTNL.

BSNL offers telecom services throughout India other than Delhi and Mumbai. At present, BSNL has just 10.3% of mobile users!

MTNL, which provides telecom services in Mumbai and Delhi, has just 0.29% of the share of mobile users!

The market share of other private telecom services companies may be noted in this regard: Jio - 32.1%, Airtel - 28.43%, and Vodafone-Idea - 28.89%.

So,  BSNL and MTNL have appealed that with their market share of mobile users being less than 15%, they must be exempted from the regulation regarding the minimum price limit!
