Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has imposed over 30 rules/regulations/restrictions for those who set up shops in Marina Beach. GCC has further announced that any violation of these rules will entail a penalty of Rs. 5000.

The Chennai High Court has ordered GCC to renovate the Marina Beach and the Foreshore Estate Loop Road. It has especially mentioned that the shops in Marina Beach must be streamlined with only 900 traders. It has emphasised that a 60% quota must be allotted to those who already run shops in the Marina Beach and a 40% quota must be allotted to those who apply fresh to set shops in Marina Beach.

With over 1300 traders in the Marina Beach already having the trader Identity Cards, there is now a situation where only 540 will get to continue their shops. So, the traders have protested very strongly against this.

In this situation, GCC has announced that those interested in setting shops in Marina Beach (fresh ones) can submit their applications from 3rd April.

Accordingly, the application forms can be procured until 3rd April. The filled applications must be submitted from 10th April to 15th April!

The applications will be verified and those which are okayed will be included in a lucky draw to be conducted to select the winners of the 900 shops. GCC has subsequently announced that those who are selected thus will have to follow over 30 rules/regulations and restrictions.

According to this, only one shop will be a giver for 1 family. The trader selling cool drinks, cosmetic items, food items, and snacks MUST possess the ISI certificate.

Also, the shop owner must use only the smart cart provided by GCC for this. He/she should not make any other structure. Permissions will not be given to have LPG cooking gas cylinders and generators.

30 conditions including a prohibition on laying chairs/tables around the shop are being imposed by GCC on eh shop-owners in the Marina Beach. Other include usages of banned plastic items, employing children under 14 years of age, etc. GCC has warned that stringent legal action will be taken on violation of any these conditions.
