The desalination plant in Nemmeli has been shut down and this has led to gap in the water distribution. To overcome this gap, Chennai metro water department or MWD has been drawing additional water from Chembarambakkam reservoir to maintain piped water supply in south Chennai.
Since Tuesday, the MWD has stopped supply from the desalination plant. This plant has got a capacity to supply 100 mld to various parts of south Chennai is known. Piped water supply has resumed once again with alternative sources from water bodies in Veeranam and Chembarambakkam. To bridge the gap in water supply, an additional quantity of 100 mld is being drawn every day from the Chembarambakkam rweservoir. Point is this reservoir at present has got 1990 cubic feet of water against its capacity of 3231 mcft.
It was later brought out by some officials belonging to MWD that from the state of AP, Chennai has been getting 706 cusecs of Krishna water and there would be sufficient water available in this upcoming summer season. For the sake of providing water to the south Chennai localities such as Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery and Mylapore, the additional water that is being drawn from Chembarambakkam reservoir is being fed into the distribution network. This was confirmed by the officials.
It is important to mention that about 30 mld f total 180 mld water brought by means of giant pipeline from Cuddalore district based Veeranam tank is being diverted near Kelambakkam. This is to provide water to south Chennai places like Sholinganallur, Injambakkam and Perungudi etc.
