In the wake of two State Corporation buses being attacked recently, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) in Vizhupuram has scaled down operations. The buses were attacked near Marakkanam by PMK cadres.
‘Of the 3,000 services covering Chennai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur districts, 197 services were suspended owing to the sensitive situation in these districts after the clash. We had completely suspended our services on the East Coast Road (ECR) to Puducherry and villages surrounding Kalpakkam. Buses are being operated with police bundobust in sensitive areas… Buses between Chennai and Puducherry via ECR were diverted through Tindivanam… Two buses in Kancheepuram district and Wallajah near Tiruthani in Tiruvallur districts were damaged. We are operating our fleets under the directions of the police to prevent any untoward incident. However, the crewmembers are driving the vehicles with fear in apprehension of attacks during the journey’, says a senior TNSTC official.
