The grand occasion of the Sri Rama Navami is celebrated during the Tamil calendar month of Panguni when ‘Navami’ thidhi and the star of ‘punarpoosam’ combine!
The avatar or incarnation of Vishnu as Lord Rama is one of the most glorious. Lord Rama was born on the day of Navami (9th day of the growing phase of the moon for the fortnight) in the Tamil calendar month of Chithirai. However, during some years this falls on the Tamil calendar month of Panguni as well.
Born as the son of King Dasaratha, Rama left for the forest just as ordered by king Dasaratha. He spent 14 years in the forest. During this period, he lost his wife Sita as well (captured by the evil king Ravan). Lord Rama was a devoted monogamist and his wife conveys a lot of morals to the people in leading their lives! As it was ‘ayanam’ (path to be taken) shown by Lord Rama, this epic is known as Ramayanam!
