Shops in Chennai run out of stocks due to supply chain breakage

Shops running out of stocks which seemed unimaginable in the past due to regular supply chain have become a reality now.

There is now breakage in the supply chain and as a result of this the super markets as well as smaller stores in Chennai city are fast running out of stocks. It must be noted that this supply chain breakage was because of closure of TN borders due to the nationwide shutdown.

Normally, lorry services are involved in carrying the products to the shops and super markets in Chennai but now traders are hoping that the proposal to start supply by goods trains would fructify.

It is worth mentioning that some super markets have run out of bread, biscuits, sanitary napkins etc and stocks in many other shops have been reducing at faster rate. The stock might not last for more than 4 to 5 days and this was as per some shop owners. It was brought out by Mr. Arumugavel Ajay, manager of Saravana Stores Supermarket of Ekkattuthangal that more than 100 companies used to supply stocks in the past but now not even 20 companies are ready to supply.

He threw light on how his shop has been receiving millets and rice but stopped getting others like bread and biscuits. He added that this had affected the customers including those who stocked up when the shutdown was announced. The disruption in the lorry service has been responsible for the shortage of stocks. This was according to Mr. S. Soundarajan, south Chennai president of TN Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai.
