In the wake of motorists not adhering to prescribed format of number plates, the Chennai City Traffic Police (CCTP) has issued a directive to all motorists to prescribe to the Number Plate norms under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 within a week’s time.
According to the norms, private vehicles must have letters and numerals in black while the background must be white. In case of commercial vehicles, letters and numerals must be black while the background must be yellow.
In an official statement, the CCTP said, ‘In recent times motorists failed to follow the regulations with respect to the Number Plate norms. Vehicles have number plates in non-prescribed sizes and fancy letters, which make it difficult for the traffic police to identify the registration number of vehicles involved in accidents and traffic violations. This has led to a situation wherein compensation for victims of accidents and conviction of offenders are delayed.’
