For violating social distancing, as many as 52 meat shops in Chennai sealed

It is very important to maintain social distancing in this scenario of Corona virus creating havoc for many lives. 

People go out of their homes to buy meat at the shops in Chennai and this result in overcrowding in the shops. Many meat shops are present very close and this could result in more number of people getting Covid-19 infection issue. On Sunday, 5th April 2020, the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC sealed as many as 52 meat shops as these meat shops violated social distancing. In addition, 425 kg of meat was also seized from the shops.

As many as 10 meat shops in the Alandur zone and as many as 8 meat shops in Adyar zone were closed by the officials. In Royapuram and Tondiarpet zones, the GCC officials sealed 6 meat shops for not following social distancing. It must be taken into note that GCC had instructed the meat shop owners to maintain social distancing but many did not follow this and hence the shops were sealed.

The field officials were given instructions to seal the shops if the officials found shops were selling meats butchered outside Chennai Corporation slaughter houses.

For a time of 3 months, the sealed meat shops would remain closed and this as mentioned by Chennai Corporation commissioner, Mr. G. Prakash. After getting de-sealing orders from GCC, the meat shops would be re-opened. It was pointed out that 1 kg of mutton is now sold at a rate of Rs 1000 and before Covid-19 outbreak one kg of mutton was sold for Rs 740.
