The Greater Chennai Corporation was constrained to take the bold action of closing the T Nagar vegetable market! Even after shifting the market to the more spacious playground area, the public could not maintain the ‘Social Distance’ between one another in spite of repeated appeals/warnings!
As 144 is in vogue for 21 days in the lockdown situation as a preventive action against the spreading of the raging coronavirus, only shops selling essential items such as milk, vegetables, and grocery items are allowed to be open from 6.00 AM to 1.00 PM.
It has been ordered that the public visiting these shops must observe and keep the ‘social distance’ between one another! Shops violating this are sealed!
In this situation, as most of the suburban vegetable shops are located in narrow streets/lanes, they were shifted to the nearest school/college playgrounds and bus terminus. Shops were set up at ideal distances and the public, observing the social distance, visit and buy vegetables.
Accordingly, the playground in T Nagar Venkat Narayana Road was used to function as a vegetable market. However, a large number of complaints were received that the system of social distance was not all being observed here! Subsequently, in spite of the police and GCC officials warning several times about social distancing, it was not followed!
Subsequently, GCC and the Police jointly ordered the shops to be closed. Accordingly, all the shops set up in the Venkat Narayana playground were removed and grounds were locked and sealed!
