Tamil Nadu Minister for Transport V. Senthil Balaji said that the vehicular population in the Statewas 1.72 crores as on 31st March 2013. According to a study, 94% of the total belong to non transport vehicles – there are 10.42 lakh transport vehicles in Tamil Nadu.
The rate of growth of vehicular population came down to 11.21% in the last fiscal, said Mr. Senthil Balaji. The State had 1.41 crore two wheelers as on 31st March, he said. 90% of the passenger traffic in the State is by road transport and 50% of it is freight traffic.
There was also a large increase in the number of people who got driving licenses. 9.46 lakh people received their licenses in the last financial year.
