Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswamy has announced that the Corporations of Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai will observe 100% lockdown conditions for 4 days from 26th April to 29th April and 3 days 100% lockdown conditions observed in Salem and Tirupur Corporations from 26th April to 28th April.
The Chief Minister observed that a 100% lockdown will be observed from 6.00 AM to 9.00 PM in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai Corporations for 4 days - Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
The Chief Minister further informed that apart from the very essential activities, all other activities will be blocked.
The notification released by the Chief Minister in this regard mentions:
“I have reviewed the current situation on the coronavirus pandemic status in Tamil Nadu. Today (Friday, 24th April). Though the pandemic has come under control in rural areas, there is scope for the infection spread in the city areas and the places of dense population.
As the maximum extent of the infection exists in the major cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai, a review meeting was conducted with the medical and general health experts, it was recorded that the lockdown must be imposed to the fullest extent in these areas to bring the infection spread under control.
So, seriously considering the current situation on the coronavirus spread and the recommendations of the medical and health experts, the following decisions have been taken by the Tamil Nadu State Government:”
- Total 100% lockdown conditions will be observed by the major city corporations in Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore for 4 days from 26th April until 29th April from 6.00 AM on Sunday, 26th April until 9.00 PM on Wednesday, 29th April.
- In the Salem and Tirupurcorporation areas, total lockdown conditions will be observed from 6.00 AM on Sunday, 26th April until 9.00 PM on Tuesday, 28th April. Only the following essential activities will be permitted during this period:
- Hospitals, medical laboratories, pharmacies, ambulances, and dead body vehicle services will be allowed.
- The organizations which undertake essential duties such as the Chief Secretariat, the Department of Cleanliness and Family Welfare, Police, Revenue, and the Major Disaster Management Departments, Electricity, Aavin, local administration, and drinking water supply departments will all function with limited staff.
- In the other central and state government offices, 33% of staff, required for the essential operations, will be allowed to work.
- Amma Canteens and ATMs will continue functioning.
- Among the restaurants, the services of food items ordered through the phone and delivered will be allowed.
- Senior citizens, differently-abled persons, destitute homes, and the persons helping senior citizens will all be allowed.
- The Cooking avenues functioning for the destitute people organized byby the district administrations, department of social welfare, and local administration will continue to function.
- Organizations that help poor people, and other similar set-ups, can function with permission from the state government.
- The wholesale vegetable markets such as Koyambedu will function strictly under regulations. The mobile shops selling vegetables and fruits will be allowed to function. Please note that for these 4/3 days, permission will not be given to those who had got permission earlier.
- Apart from the above, all the other activities are completely blocked. Other government sector offices (Registration offices) will not function. The employees from the IT Industry can work from home. Other private organizations will not work.
- Apart from the corporations mentioned at the start, the lockdown conditions will be continued in other areas as practiced. During this period, the marked infected areas will be brought/monitored under strict control. Disinfectants will be sprayed twice in a day in these zones. If anyone violates these conditions, their vehicles will be confiscated and stringent action will be taken.
Appeal from the Chief Minister
As coronavirus is an infection that spreads quite easily and quite fast from one to another, I appeal to the public to extend the whole-hearted cooperation and support on this critical juncture!
