GI tag granted to Kovilpatti based Kadalai Mittai now

The long wait is now over for Kovilpatti kadalai mittai!!
The news is after 5 year long wait Kovilpatti kadalai mitai has finally got GI or Geographical Indication tag. It is known that kadalai mittai is chikki or jaggery with peanuts and is very delicious to taste.
It is now said that the members of Kovilpatti Regional Kadaklai Mittai Manufacturers and Retailers Association based on Kovilpatti and in some small towns and villages in Tuticorin district of TN would have an exclusive right over the tag.
Important point to note is that GI tags are granted to those produce or products originating from or having unique qualities corresponding to a geographical area. Information gathered is this tag gives exclusive right to its holders over the uniqueness of the product. None other than the rights holders could claim or use the product name attributing to its geographical region would be ensured by this GI tag.
Geographical Indications Registry has granted this GI tag to the groundnut sweet recognizing the uniqueness of the ingredients used for its manufacture. These ingredients are procured from the geographical area of Kovilpatti.
According to Mr. Sanjai Gandhi, IPR attorney and associations, it was clear that various ingredients used in the making of kadalai mittai includes groundnut grown in the native black soil of Kovilpatti, organic jiggery and water sourced from Thamarabarani river.
It must be noted that the application seeking GI tag for the sweet was made by the Kovilpatti Regional Kadalaimittai Manufacturers and Retailers Associations on 3rd July 2014.
