Increase in stipend for Tribal students

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced that students who were pursuing a Ph. D. and were part of Adi Dravida and Tribal communities, would receive a stipend of Rs. 50000 per year for the study period of four years. Rs. 3.5 crores has been set aside for the purpose. Ms. Jayalalithaa said that 700 students will be eligible for this scheme.

Currently, the stipend per year is Rs. 18000 for those who stay at hostels and Rs. 10000 for day scholars. ‘Fifty two Adi Dravida hostels and two tribal hostels which were hitherto functioning in private buildings would move to their own premises’, said that Chief Minister.
