The weather system brewing in the Bay of Bengal might be responsible for the increase in the day temperatures in the coastal places in TN from 17th of May 2020.

In this summer season, the maximum temperatures in coastal places like Chennai have been close to the normal. It is now said that hot weather over the coastal places might be triggered due to low pressure over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. This low pressure was expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by 16th of May 2020.

The maximum temperature recorded in the Chennai city on Wednesday was 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature was considered to be close to the normal for the period. The weather system was expected to re-curve to the north and north-east wards and this might trigger a change in the wind direction to north-westerly winds. Hot air would be brought in the coastal places like Chennai etc. This was according to Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning centre.

He explained that there might be increase in the temperature by 1 or 2 degrees Celsius in TN from 17th May onwards. Heat wave condition in the coastal places was not expected for the next few days. It must be taken into note that the interior places might see spike in the temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Around 16th and 17th May, districts along the Western Ghats might get rainfall.

Around 16th May, southwest monsoon is likely to set in Andaman and Nicobar islands but it might take some more days for the monsoon to make its presence felt in the state of Kerala.

Later on, the monsoon might move into rest of India. The day temperatures in Chennai stayed close to normal of 36 degrees - 37 degrees Celsius till middle of May in this year. As a result, Chennai city did not have scorching heat.
