The work on restoring the lakes in Chennai has begun now by the Water Resources Department, Chennai and by the end of July month, major portions would be completed. Before the onset of the northeast monsoon, the entire work would be over. This was according to the WRD officials.

The eco-park restoration works have already started for the lakes in Chitlapakkam, Vengaivasal, and Perumbakkam. An amount of Rs 25 crores has been allotted for the restoration work of Chitlapakkam Lake and in the last month, the much-awaited and long-pending restoration works of this lake began.

It was brought out by Mr. G. Radhakrishnan, assistant executive engineer of WRD, that in the lockdown period the eco-park restoration works of other 3 lakes have also started. He explained how the restoration work on Chitlapakkam Lake that has been delayed for a long time has been going on in full steam now. He hinted that after the restoration work gets over the groundwater table would improve and it would help the surrounding areas.

As a part of eco-restoration work, the park and walkway would be constructed along the bund of Chitlapakkam, perumbakkam, Vengaivasal, and Adambakkam lakes.

It must be noted that the restoration works of the lakes were expected to be over by June month but the lockdown has delayed the works. The officials have increased the speed of the work and it would be completed before the monsoon sets in. This was according to the assistant executive engineer of WRD.
