Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced several measures to improve sports and sports facilities on Tuesday. The government has set aside Rs. 5 crores to renovate the tennis stadium in Nungambakkam, Rs. 12 crores to build an integrated sports complex at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Rs. 1.5 crores to construct lodging and boarding facilities in Trichy and Chennai, Rs. 50 lakh to set up gyms for the secretarial staff, among other measures.
‘The renovation of tennis stadium includes setting up of floodlights, upgrading score boards, establishing VIP rooms and introduction of live telecast facilities’, said Ms. Jayalalithaa. ‘The facelift for Jawaharlal Nehru stadium would include construction of a squash, basketball, volleyball and badminton courts, and construction of a swimming pool for the differently-abled… (We are also introducing the) state games for Chief Minister`s Trophy on a par with National Games. The winner would bag Rs. 1 lakh cash prize and a gold medal.’
