The slum areas and densely populated areas belonging to the city of Chennai have more Coronavirus positive cases is a known fact. For the sake of controlling the spread of COVID in these places in Chennai, GCC has launched CIP or Community Intervention Program.
Memorandum of Understanding or MoU has been signed with as many as 92 NGOs to take part in this program. This was brought out by Mr G. Prakash, Chennai Corporation commissioner. He explained about how the NGOs would identify aged and persons with co-morbid conditions.
Awareness would be created on the symptoms plus on wearing of face masks. The Community Intervention program has been responsible for the lesser number of Coronavirus cases in the slum resettlement areas like Kannagi Nagar, Semmenchery and Ezhil Nagar etc.
It was later revealed by a release from the Chennai Corporation that the program has been launched at the community level in as many as 1979 thickly populated areas and 2300 outreach workers have been appointed at these locations in Chennai.
Outreach workers would be playing important roles by enquiring the family members regarding their symptoms. In addition to this, the outreach workers would also be involved in helping GCC in the transportation of the infected persons to the hospital or to quarantine centres etc. In the month of May, under CIP, GCC had conducted 174 awareness sessions reaching out to 1.7 lakh population in the intervention areas.
For demonstrating hand-washing and other preventive methods, several activities like puppet shows, street plays, auto campaigns etc were held.
