There are around 20,000 active Coronavirus cases in Chennai city.

It is now revealed that the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has arranged as many as 33,904 beds at COVID care centers. Truth is this is excluding the beds available in the government and private hospitals in Chennai.

At 53 institutions, COVID care centers have been set up and 14,406 beds have been provided at these centers. At the schools run by the Corporation of Chennai, there are 2,479 beds and at the nursing college outside the corporation, there are another 600 beds.

There are many unused multi-storey buildings in Chennai that have been constructed by not following norms and these buildings would be taken up by GCC for converting them as quarantine centers.

As per an official belonging to GCC it was clear that in addition to the institutional care centers as many as 4200 beds are ready at Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board or TNSCB apartments of Ambattur zone. In the community centers belonging to GCC, there are 1300 beds.

He concluded that overall GCC has arranged for as many as 33,904 beds across Chennai. Asymptomatic persons, as well as those with mild symptoms, have been sent to COVID care centers and these persons are kept in quarantine for 14 days.

It must be taken into account that 30 percent of Corona positive persons are at COVID care centers and the rest are at hospitals or under home quarantine. In the COVID care centers, nearly 5000 beds have been occupied and the rest vacant.

These vacant beds would be used in case of a huge spread of the infection. In the Adyar zone belonging to GCC, there are institutions like Anna University and IIT M and due to these this zone has got the highest number of COVID care beds.
