In the month of May, the outbreak of Coronavirus positive cases has led to the closure of the Koyambedu wholesale market.
Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu Mr. O. Paneerselvam has confirmed that this important market in Chennai would be reopened once again for the sake of the people of Chennai. This was mentioned by Mr. A. Vikaramaraja, president Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu.
To facilitate re-opening of the Koyambedu market, the deputy CM has promised to set up a committee comprising officials and traders. The market would be opened once again after consulting with the CM of Tamil Nadu Mr. E. Palaniswami. This would be a step towards opening the market. This was according to Mr. Vikramaraja. He took part in a meeting with the CM at the Secretariat.
The re-opening of the wholesale market complex including fruits, vegetables, flowers and groceries in Koyambedu has been demanded by Vikaramaraja. He added that this market complex has been shut down since the month of May 2020 to control Coronavirus spread. This has created a difficult situation for wholesalers and for the retailers. Truth is 5000 wholesalers and retailers have lost their livelihood.
The president of TN Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu later shed light on how the produce from the temporary market opened at Thirumazhisai (with 200 vegetable shops) did not reach the residents in sufficient quantities. It must be noted that the unsold produce was wasted at the new market in Thirumazhisai due to absence of enough storage.
Seeking the re-opening of the food grains market, Koyambedu Food Grains Traders Association has moved the High Court. The association was of the opinion that the authorities belonging to Chennai Corporation have shut down shops in the food grain market also though Coronavirus positive cases were detected among the workers and traders of vegetable market inside the sprawling complex.
