Deepening ponds, strengthening bunds and paving walker’s paths would be some of the restorative activities that would be carried out in the water bodies in Chennai.
To get ready for this year’s monsoon and to make up for the lost time, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is speeding up the restoration works of various water bodies.
It is well known that already GCC has been doing many things to control the spread of Coronavirus pandemic. It was revealed by a senior official that under various projects a total of 210 water bodies would be rejuvenated. This would include projects under Smart City Mission in 3 phases.
Information is while the work of 105 water bodies were finished works of 78 water bodies are still going on. For the restoration of 27 water bodies, funds are expected. Finishing projects under CMCDM or Chennai Mega City Development Mission were given importance by the corporation officials.
There are some badly maintained water bodies in places such as Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Thiru- Vi- Ka Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur etc. It is said that the GCC has ordered the officials to speed up the restoration works of the water bodies at the above said places in Chennai. An amount of Rs 110 crores would be spent on restoration works of 47 water bodies under CMCDM.
It is now brought out that work has been going at a fast rate at Edayanchavadi Tank, Sarangapani Kulam and at Harikrishnapuram tank in Manali. In the same manner, at Madhavaram, water bodies of Padavattamman koil, Ring Road Housing Sector and Swamy Nagar are also restored.Restoration works are going on in Ambattur, Porur, Korattur etc based water bodies too.
As per the official belonging to GCC, restoration works have been going on in all the 47 water bodies and 30% of works have been completed till now.
