Fire at the Chennai harbour

Tension prevailed at the Chennai Harbour as a fire erupted in the garbage yard on the premises on Sunday. An alarm was sent out when witnesses noticed smoke emanating from the Harbour campus opposite the Secretariat.
An official press release from the Chennai Port Trust said, ‘A smoke was seen emanating near the garbage dump yard at Jawahar dock south area at about 4.44 pm. While two port fire service vehicles reached the spot and commenced fire fighting, help was also sought from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service, which immediately pressed two fire tenders into operations and helped put out the fire by 5.46 pm… There was no damage to port property. Four tyres and some materials belonging to a stevedore were affected. But there were no casualties.
