Southern Railways has come forward to introduce 14 new trains in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the current year. Further, it has proposed to extend the service of 12 trains.
An annual meeting is conducted by IRCTC - Indian Railways Time Table Council. The representatives of the various Zonal Railways will participate in this annual meeting. During this annual IRCTC meeting, each zonal railway will submit its recommendations for the required additional trains in the respective zones.
Accordingly, recommendations have been submitted from the South Zonal Railways from the Divisions in Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Trichy, Thiruvananthapuram, and Palakkadu for the introduction of 14 new trains and to extend the route for 12 existing trains.
Chennai Division: On behalf of the Chennai Division, daily express train Chennai - Tirupathi and weekly express trains Tambaram - Visakhapappattibnam has been submitted for the introduction.
On behalf of the Madurai Division, it has been proposed for introducing a new train Thirunelveli - Coimbatore. This train will operate in the route - Thenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, Palani, and Pollachi. Further, extensions of the route have been recommended and proposed for Rameswaram - Madurai passengers up to Coimbatore, and the Bikaneer - Madurai Anuvrat Express up to Thirunelveli.
Salem Division has recommended operating 2 trains on the same night in the sections: Coimbatore - Rameswaram, and Coimbatore - Bangalore.
On behalf of the Trichy Division, 5 new trains have been proposed in recommendations. Trichy - Bangalore (Route: Karur, Salem, Hosur), and Trichy - Paiyappanahalli biweekly express, Tambaram - Karaikkudi Daily Express Train, Trichy - Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai), Thiruvarur - Karaikkudi passenger train. Further, recommendations have been submitted to extend 6 existing trains,
On behalf of the Palakkadu Division, recommendations have been proposed to introduce 2 new trains: Rameswaram - Palakkadu and Dindigul - Palakkadu.
Tiruvananthapuram Division has recommended the introduction of 2 new trains: Anthyodhaya weekly expresses Kochuveli - Coimbatore and weekly express train Ernakulam - Velankanni. It had been planned earlier fort these 2 new trains to be introduced from 1st July. However, the raging coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown conditions have delayed this.
Regarding the above new proposals, the Southern Railway officials shared:
“All the above proposals recommended by the 6 division as details above have been forwarded to the IRCTC and the Central Department t of Railways for approval. Approval from the Railways Headquarters is mandatory for the introduction of new trains. So, after a thorough review, these proposals are sent to the Central Department for approval.
Further, in the present times of the raging coronavirus pandemic crisis and lockdown situation, there are no indications for the revival of train services as of now. So, there is no time limit that can be set for the introduction of the above trains.”
