The latest news is 4 zones of GCC have a higher mortality rate. The Chennai city’s overall mortality rate stood at 1.67% and the TN state mortality rate stood at 1.45% on Tuesday.
It is important to mention here that Tiruvottriyur and Teynampet zones have a death rate of 2.24%. The death rate was slightly above 2% in Thiru Vi-Ka-Nagar zone and in the Tondiarpet zones with 2.22% and 2.19% respectively.
Least number of total positive cases was recorded from the Tiruvottiyur zone and it was 3252. This zone had the least number of positive cases than other 4 zones. As many as75 deaths were reported from this Tiruvottiyur zone.
Teynampet had as many as 213 deaths and others like Tondiarpet and Thiru Vi-K-Nagar zones had 193 and 155 deaths respectively. Various factors like the spread of Covid-19 among the elderly population plus persons with co-morbid conditions have been responsible for high numbers of deaths in certain zones. This was explained by an officer from the GCC.
He then spoke about how the elderly persons were more vulnerable of getting affected by Coronavirus infection and how the mortality rate could be high among them. The official hinted that heavy crowding in the zones like Teynampet, Tondiarpet and Thiru Vi- Ka-Nagar was responsible for the difficulty in enforcing social distancing in these zones.
This has resulted in more number of Coronavirus positive cases and deaths. Point is those persons with co-morbid conditions like BP, diabetes and heart diseases etc must protect themselves from contracting the infection.
