The Central Government Department of Telecommunications has granted approval for the employees working in the sectors of Information Technology (IT) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) the facility to ‘work from home’ until 31st December.

Over 40 Lakhs of employees in the IT & BPO sectors throughout the country have been working from home for, the month of March. In the initial stages, permission to work from home was given only until the end of April. However, with the raging spread of the coronavirus pandemic still to be brought under control, the central government has extended the permission to work from home for the IT & BPO employees until the end of July.

As the safety/protection of their employees is better to ensure under this ‘work from home’ system and the progress on work is also, smooth as well, the IT and BPO & the telecommunication sector industries expressed their desire to continue this mode of working from home. Accordingly, while companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, etc., have extended the ‘work from home’ facility until the end of October, the companies Google and Facebook have granted permission for their employees to ‘work from home’ till the end of December!

In this scenario, a review/analytical meeting was organized by the central ministry/department of telecommunication with all the State ministers for the telecommunication Department yesterday (Tuesday, 21st July). In this meeting, giving due consideration to the prevailing status of the coronavirus spread and the lockdown situation, a decision was taken to give permission to the IT & BPO sector employees to continue working from home until the end of this year.

The CEOs of WIPRO and NASSCOM have welcomed and appreciated this decision!
