Passport police verification has been faster than usual in the Regional Passport Office (RPO) at Chennai. Where it earlier took five to six months, it now takes just 20 – 30 days. The districts that come under the RPO are Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. Also, under the RPO are Puducherry and Karaikal.
‘In the old system it took five to six months to complete police verification for those who applied under normal category. The passport office in Chennai got the third position at the all-India level with regard to issuance of police verification letters, where it was 32 days. Delhi tops the list where the letters were issued in 23 days followed by Chandigarh in 28 days. The Chennai RPO was pushed to the third place at the national level due to delay in the issuance of police verification letters from other districts falling under the RPOs of Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi… Nation-wide, the Chennai passport office was ranked fourth for processing the maximum number of passport applications’, said an RPO official.
