Friday was the hottest day yet this summer. Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius and Meenambakkam 42.4 degrees Celsius. The Met Dept. has predicted a heat wave over the weekend.
Says Deputy Director of the Chennai Meteorological Department YEA Raj said, ‘The sea breeze set in only at 3 pm at Nungambakkam. So temperature levels soared and put people to inconvenience. Usually, the weather levels dip when there is clouding and easterly winds, but on Friday, there was no clouding and the sun’s radiation hit the earth directly. There was no onset of sea breeze over Meenambakkam and so the temperature levels soared in the airport town… It (is) normal for temperature levels to peak during the last week of May due to strong northwesterly winds. The westerly winds had led to development of high-pressure gradient over the peninsular region leading to flow of hot air… While the temperature levels are expected to stay above normal for the next few days, there could be a slight dip from the current high levels. Unlike Delhi and Nagpur, Sea breeze is very important for Chennai and we hope things will get better in the coming days.’
