The city of Chennai was born on 22nd August 1639! So, today (Saturday, 22nd August 2020) is the Happy Birth Day occasion for the lovable Chennai Metro City!
As such, the city of never-sleeping and never-boring Chennai Metro City, known by various names – Chennai-pattinam, Madrasa-pattinam, later Madras, and now Chennai, is celebrating its 381st birthday today!
The special and unique features or hallmarks of the great Chennai Metro City are indeed countless! To mention a few, it is the best to start with filter-coffee with ultra-special flavour, prominent and well-known religious places, the super-popular art/culture marks of Karnatic Music and Bhatarathanatyam, the ‘beach sundal’, super-tasty typical fu-fledged South Indian Food, IIT Chennai, Anna University, super-special and the supremely beautiful beach, the headquarters of the 254-hours Tamil Film Industry. In fact, one can go on and on!
The city that never sleeps – the Chennai Metro City, is the 6th largest city (on the basis of population) in India
Chennai Metro City remains as one of the typical identities representing the Tamil people and their long-standing culture!
Francis Day Andrew Gohan of the East India Company, bought the place where the St. George Fort is located now from 2 persons – Ayyappan and Venkatappan! As the father of these 2 persons had the name Chennappa Naicker, the city lying north of the St. George Fort was known as Chennapattinam!
The English people built St George Fort in the year 1639. Subsequently, the city started growing! Gradually, the localities of Thiruvallikkeni, Mylapore, Thiruvotriyur, and Thiruvanmiyur got linked with Chennapattinam.
It is worth noting that al these areas are centuries’ old!
The French Army captured the St. George Fort and the Chennai city in the year 1746. However, the English recaptured them in 1749!
Only after 1749, the city of Chennai started growing rapidly – as a result, the other major cities in the country were linked by rail with Chennai City.
Once India got its independence in the year 1947, ‘Madras’ became the capital of the Madras State. Later, in the year 1996, the late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister renamed the city as ‘Chennai’! In this historic event, 3 persons are attributed for the change of name – the popular historian S. Muthaiah, Senior journalist Sashi Nayar, and the publisher Vincent D’Souza! It is also mentioned that other persons – journalist and editor Sushils Ravindran, journalist Revathy, and Industrialist Sriram joined the above 3 persons!
Unique!
The Marina Beach, one of the precious jewels of the Chennai Metro City, is the 2nd longest beach in the world. It is 13 km long. This one beach has been divided into 3 sections: The north end of the beach, where the river Cooum merges with the sea, and its southern part is known as Marina Beach.
The region where the river Adayaru merges with the sea is known as Santhome Beach. The part of the beach south of this Adyar is known as Elliot’s beach or the Besant Nagar Beach.
The moment the name ‘Chennai; is mentioned, the memory fills with – Marina Beach, the temples, Karnatic Music recitals, and the richly flavoured filter coffee with its typical smell!
One can now add the struggle for removing the ban on jallikattu, the hugely-popular annual event of IPL Limited Overs Cricket Competition, and the totally unimaginable event of Chennai city being flooded and deluged in the year 2015.
Dhoni
The super-star and cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (fondly known as MSD!), so fond of the Chennai Metro City, proudly mentioned that Chennai is his 2nd home! It is indeed quite remarkable that MSD announced his retirement from international cricket representing India. MSD has a huge number of fans and admirers in the Chennai Metro City! It is mentioned that this is the precise reason why MSD announced his retirement in Chennai!
Kamala Harris
Now, jumping on to another relevant topic – Kamala Harris, who has been nominated by the USA Democratic Party as the contestant for the USA Vice President Post had spent the major chunk of childhood days in Chennai Metro City! In one of the recent interviews, Kamala Harris has particularly mentioned about the Besant Nagar Beach and the regular beach-walk she had undertaken with her maternal grandfather. With her mention, Chennai city attained international recognition and importance – a number of world citizens indeed started searching to locate Chennai and its specialities and the meaning of the Tamil Words such as ‘Chithi’ (mother’s younger sister) on Google!
