47,671 seats available for admission in engineering courses before counselling!

A rather unique situation has arisen in the State of Tamil Nadu where it is reported that over 47,000 seats are available to join the graduate engineering courses even before the commencement of the counselling!
The counselling for the admission to the graduate engineering courses is scheduled to be conducted during the month of September.
1.60 Lakhs candidates (students) have applied for this. Out of this, only 1,14,206 candidates have uploaded their original certificates online.
In this academic year, admissions for 1,61,877 seats available in 458 engineering colleges are to be given. As only those candidates who had uploaded their original certificates are eligible to participate in the counselling, even before the commencement of counselling, there are 47,671 seats vacant!
It is noteworthy here that during the last year, out of the available 1.75 Lakhs seats, around 91,000 seats were not filled!
