Zipping from OMR to Koyambedu in just 90 minutes!! Yes!! It’s true!!
It is now brought out that in a few years of time the Chennai residents would be able to travel from OMR to CMBT in Koyambedu in around 90 minutes. This would be possible because of the fact that in another 5 years the 119km phase-2 metro rail network with longer lines, smaller stations and advanced driverless trains would become reality.
There are few items listed by CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited and these items would be needed for 3 corridor phases that would connect far flung places of Chennai city and suburbs.
Various items that are required by CMRL are needles, ballpoint pens, grease cans, fake note detectors, 138 three-car trains, signalling and telecom systems for 119kms etc. By 2025-26, DPR would be ready.
With the idea to shop from the Indian companies, 5 year procurement projections were put on the CMRL website. It must be taken into note that this 5 year plan was as per the instructions given by the ministry for encouraging make in India. It was pointed out by a CMRL officer that the procurement projections would play a huge role in helping the Indian firms to plan their business and expand accordingly.
He added that the Indian firms could work with CMRL by taking part in the bids when the bids get floated. Factors like distance covered by the metro trains and the passengers` usage would play a role in the procurement of items such as trains, smart cards etc.
By the year 2025, about 19.2 lakhs people would be able to use metro trains in phase-2 corridor and 43.5lakhs by the year 2055 this was as per the DPR. Point is that CMRL has already designed sleeker underground stations, stations hanging from more than 27 metres, multi-storey properties and driverless trains.
It must not be forgotten that the phase-1 construction took nearly 10 years of time. It is now revealed that CMRL would be tweaking contracts to build phase-2 in quicker time. Truth is people would be shifting to metro trains slowly from MRTS, MTC buses and suburban trains etc.
