2011 Census abstract released

According to a census of 2011 abstract, Chennai is the most densely populated city in Tamil Nadu. The capital city has 46 million people who live here. There are 26553 people per square kilometre. Coming a far second is Kanyakumari with a density of 1111 people per square kilometre.

Chennai has been declared ‘completely urban’. Its population is substantiated with spill over from Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts, which are adjacent to the city. According to the census, Kanchipuram has a decadal growth of 38.1 per cent and Tiruvallur 34.3 per cent.

The census has also shown a drop in the number of ‘main workers’. The number of female workers in 2001 was 88.6 per cent compared to  81 per cent in 2011. The number of male workers was 93.8 per cent in 2001 compared to 91.8 per cent in 2011.
