Chennai-Bengaluru highway is one the most widely used stretches and there is huge traffic here is a well known fact.
The work to strengthen the 23km stretch of this highway from Maduravoyal to Sriperumbudur has commenced now. An amount of Rs 35 crores would be spent for making the road a smooth riding surface plus for making the road to carry huge volumes of traffic that it would get every day.
Information is that on an average this road witnesses 2lakhs passenger car units in a day.Two layers of bituminous tar would be laid on the existing road. This has been brought to light by the sources belonging to NHAI.
Additional signages would also be installed on the road and it would be completed in another 6 months. Truth is that the HC of Madras has issued direction and the work has started after this. Junctions like Vanagaram, Velappanchavady and Parivakkam are being improved by NHAI.
Lighting facility has been a cause for concern here and the proposal would not include the lighting facilities. A frequent traveller spoke about how tough it was to drive in the night time on this Chennai- Bengaluru road.
It must be taken into account that NH wing of state Highways Department has started marking roadsides to remove encroachments. The main objective was to widen the facility into 6 lanes along with service roads on either side.
The official belonging to the highways department mentioned the availability of sufficient lands and how the lands have been encroached in many places.
