The State Government of Tami Nadu has announced that (big) onion would be sold at Rs. 45 per kg in the ‘Farm Green’ shops from tomorrow (Wednesday, 21st October).
The usual quantity of onion arriving from the neighbouring states of Andhra and Karnataka was reduced because of incessant rains. This shortage led to a steep rise in onion price.
Especially, in Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable/fruit/flower market, the price of big onion had increased up to Rs. 100 to Rs. 110 per kg. This was mainly due to the reduced quantity arriving from other states.
Apart from the Chennai Metro City, onion price has increased in other cities like Trichy as well, touching Rs. 100 per kg.
In this scenario, the State Government of Tamil Nadu has announced that onion will be sold at Rs. 45 per kg in the ‘farm fresh’ shops from tomorrow.
This initiative is seen as a measure to arrest the rising price of onion.
