The latest zone wise Covid-19 data released by the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC on Sunday, 1st November took many by surprise. The data revealed an important milestone. Point is that for the first time in 5 months a zone in the Chennai city limits had less than 100 active cases.
Just a week back, Sholinganallur zone had as many as194 active Cvid-19 cases and now the number of active cases is just 94. It is known that Sholinganallur zone covers Chennai city’s southern areas and suburbs. There are only 113 active cases in the zones like Manali and Tiruvottiyur belonging to the northern zone. Alandur zone in the south has got 192 active cases.
In the last week, the zones like Alandur, Manali and Tiruvottriyur had 399 cases, 129 and 105 active cases respectively. At present in Chennai, less than 1percent of the streets have Covid-19 cases. This was according to the data from GCC.
There are now 302 streets having less than 1percent cases and nearly half of the streets belong to the central part of Chennai. The presence of a young and sparse population has been responsible for the less number of active cases and case fatality rate.
When compared to Anna Nagar and Kodambakkam zones that had more than 20,000 Covid-19 cases till now, Sholinganallur zone had just around 5400 cases. It has been revealed by the official data that Sholinganallur is spread over 42.23 sq km with a population of 1.73lakhs.
Fact is one of the 9 wards in this zone has a population of just 5035. It is now said that the Royapuram zone with a similar area has a population of 6.34lakhs or 4 times that of Sholinganallur zone.
It was mentioned by an infectious diseases expert Dr. Subramanian that the chances of a second wave in Chennai were not high.
