The onset of the southwest monsoon is expected to bring rain to Chennai in June. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMc), the monsoon is expected to bring 32 cms of rainfall.
Says an RMD official, Tamil Nadu is a rain shadow region and we get only isolated rainfall during this monsoon season. In 2012, both the monsoon seasons were not good. This time even with a slight deficit in pre-monsoon rains, we have started the monsoon on a positive note. Even during peak summer season in May, the state experienced rains in some place or the other every day. The state would get good rainfall when the clouds bypass the Palakkad stretch and enter TN. Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Ooty would get good rains during this season. Once the monsoon moves towards north India, the rainfall would decrease over the state. Overall, the city would receive only occasional thundershowers and convective activities.
