Reopening schools after December in Chennai and in TN

On Wednesday, 11th November 2020, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court suggested about the reopening of the schools in Chennai and TN after the month of December. The reason for that was the situation to reopen the schools after December would be better.

It must be noted that a PIL was filed by Mr. Ramprasad belonging to Uthamapalayam in Theni and the PIL came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justice N. Kirubakaran and B. Pugalendi. It was mentioned by these two justices that no vaccine was available for the Coronavirus infection till now.

They added that the Coronavirus infection has claimed more than 11000 persons in the state of TN.  The risk of the infection is not yet over and despite this the TN has decided to reopen the schools, colleges and other educational institutions from 16th November 2020.

The reopening of the schools etc would make the Covid-19 to spread easier and faster among the students of various districts in TN and also from other states. The PIL added that several schools were converted as COVID Care Centres and the infected persons have been undergoing treatments.

The petitioner Mr. Ramprasad has sought orders from the bench citing above issues to reverse the government order to reopen schools and other educational institutions in TN. It is worthy to mention here that during the hearing the TN government counsel submitted that the government has been consulting the parents of the students regarding reopening. Many parents were not in agreement to the reopening of the schools etc on 16th November.

The bench after the hearing opined that the reopening of the educational institutions in the state of TN might be postponed after the month of December 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Information collected is that the case has been adjourned till 20thNovember for further hearing.
