Heavy rains with thunderstorms to continue in Chennai today

The meteorological department has forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rains on Tuesday also.

It is now said that the rain that has been lashing Chennai since Sunday evening would continue even today. The suburbs have received heavy rains due to the trough of low pressure and in the last 24 hours Tambaram and Alandur received 7cm and 4cms rains respectively. Yesterday, the core places in Chennai received 1.2 cm of rain. Heavy rains in the forenoon created many issues for the residents of Chennai yesterday. The streets got flooded and the traffic slowed down in many places.

The inner roads in Chennai were also flooded due to rains in the afternoon and in the evening. On Tuesday, the condition of the sky is likely to be cloudy and thunderstorms with light to moderate rains are likely to occur in some places in Chennai. This was according to the forecast made by the meteorological department.

The rains were due to the trough of low pressure from Comorin to north TN. The department had mentioned that the rains would be heavy at times. The maximum temperature on Tuesday is likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 25 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Most parts of TN received heavy rains on Monday and this has been shown by online weather tracking sites. Thunderclouds were present over TN.

Many people could not go to their work on Monday morning due to heavy rains in Chennai and its suburbs since Sunday night. It must be taken into account that those who reached their work spots did s by struggling through inundated inner roads and some main roads. Till Monday evening, places like Nungambakkam received 1.2cm rain and Meenambakkam received 2.1cm rain. Important piece of information is that Sriperumbudur near Chennai received maximum rains in the region of 18cms.

Places like Kancheepuram, Marakkanam, Gummidipoondi, Kelambakkam etc received 16cm, 12cm, 10cm and 9 cm rains. There were good amounts of rain in most parts belonging to TN. Truth is against an expected 488.5mm rains, Chennai city received 436.8mm rains since 1st of October. That is a deficit of 11percent. 

There would be thunderstorms with moderate rains in most places in TN, Puducherry, Karaikal etc and this was as per a forecast for the rest of TN on Tuesday. It is worthy to note that isolated places over Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts would get heavy rains.
