The weekly holiday on Friday would come to an end at the Koyambedu market!!
Beginning from 22nd of November, the Koyambedu wholesale market complex would not function on Sundays. It is well known that on Monday, 800 semi-wholesale shops reopened in this market in Chennai. Truth is the traders here expect more visitors during the weekends. The Federation of All Traders Associations of Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex has decided to shift the markets weekly holiday from Friday to Sunday now to avoid overcrowding at this market complex.
Since the month of September, the TN government has allowed various sections of the market complex to be reopened in a phased manner. It was later brought out by Mr. Rajasekaran, Federation president that the fruits semi-wholesalers would be allowed to reopen shops on 23rd November.
It must be taken into note that 800 shops (out of 1600 vegetable wholesalers) located from A to G blocks were allowed to reopen and the rest would be reopened from 30th of November.
The time range in which the wholesales operate would be 9pm to 9am and the semi-wholesalers would operate after 2am. Important information is the semi-wholesalers who sell produce less than 20kgs form an important link between wholesalers and retail vendors.
The prices of vegetables have started to stabilize in the last few days and this was according to some merchants. Vegetables such as beans and okra were sold for Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg in the wholesale market.
Tomatoes were available for Rs 15 to Rs 25 per kg and onions and potatoes were sold at Rs 55 per kg and Rs 50 per kg respectively. On Wednesday, the business at the market was good as the sales have picked up. This was mentioned by Mr. S. Chandran, president of Koyambedu Periyar Wholesale Market Licensed Merchants Association.
