Residents of Chennai have complained about the lack of information about camps for enrolling for the Aadhar number. Currently, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI) is taking samples of fingerprints and irises to ensure that every citizen above the age of five has an Aadhaar number.
Joint Director of Census Operations M.R.V. Krishna Rao said, Only 14% of people in Chennai (have) registered for Aadhaar. The Aadhaar helpline had just one number, 044-24912993. We receive several calls every day and they are usually lengthy. May be that`s why some people have not been able to get through. UIDAI will soon intensify the enrolment campaign. We will stick posters in neighbourhoods and also have vehicles going around making announcements. We are also visiting houses and providing a KYR (Know Your Resident) forms with the date, time and place of registration. One of the reasons for the slow progress of Aadhaar in Tamil Nadu is the lack of a regional UIDAI office at Chennai. I have written to UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani but I did not receive any helpful information. The email said the Bangalore office would look after Tamil Nadu.
