Prospects for heavy rains in southern districts.

The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has informed that there are prospects for heavy rains today (Monday, 7th December) with thunder in the 4 districts of Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Sivagangai, and Virudhunagar due to the prevailing low pressure zone over the Bay of Mannar ocean section.

In this regard, an official from the Chennai Meteorological Centre shared on Sunday (6th December):

“The depression zone which formed over the Bay of Mannar has intensified and stabilized there. Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rains with thunder in several places in the 4 districts of Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Sivagangai, and Virudhunagar. As for the other districts, there are prospects for a widespread mild to medium rains.

As regards the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs, the sky will remain generally cloudy today (Monday, 7th December). There are prospects for mild to medium trains in some parts of the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs.

Rainfall:  As at 8.30 AM on Sunday (6th December), in the last 24 hours, the rainfall recorded in various places  Muthuppettai, Thiruvarur District – 100 mm, Mamallapuram, Chengapattu District – 70 mm, Kudavasa, Nannilam, Thaaignayiru, Nagappattinam District- 60 mm, Thiruthuraippondi, Thiruvarur District, Seyyur, Chengalpattu District- 60 mm, Kollidam, Thiruvallur District, Chozhavaram, Nagappattinam District, Thiruppoondi, Nagappattinam |District, and Chidambaram, Cuddalore District – 50 mm each.

Warning for fishermen: As high-speed winds at 35 kmph to 45 kmph is likely to blow over the southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Maldives section, and coastal Kerala, the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has warned that the fishermen in these areas MUST NOT VENTURE INTO THE SEA.

Ocean Waves: In the Northern Tamil Nadu coastal areas, from Kodikkarai to Pazhaverkadu and in Southern Coastal areas from Kulaichal to Dhanushkodi,  the sea waves are likely to climb up to heights of 1.5 metres to 3.3 metres.  So, the fishermen are warned to be extremely alert to this situation!
