Welcoming New Year - Metro Rail service in North Chennai - Tondiarpet, Thiruvotriyur, etc.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is all set to commence its public services from the 1st week of January 2021 on the extended North Chennai route from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar covering Tondiarpet and Thiruvotriyur. As per the information shared with the CMRL officials, the status/programme/proposal are as below:

CMRL officials have informed that the Railway Safety Commissioner is scheduled to inspect the safety of the new system during the 1st week of January.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project was taken up with the main objective of reducing the traffic congestion in the Chennai Metro City. During the 1st Phase of the CMR Project, the services on 2 corridors – covering a distance of 45 km – from Washermanpet to Chennai Airport and from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) was completed and are now in operation.

In this situation, the extension work on the first corridor, from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar covering Thiruvotriyur over a distance of 9.051 km is in progress for Rs. 3700 Crores.

 There are 8 stations being set up on this extended route from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar – Theagarayar College, Tondiarpettai, New Washermanpet, Toll-Gate, Kaladippettai, Thiruvotriyur Theradi, Thiruvotriyur and Wimco Nagar.

Al construction activities on the elevated section on this extension have been completed. Currently, the installation of the signalling system and electrification is in progress. These activities are to be completed in a day or two. Once this is completed, trial runs in 2 phases initially operated with a diesel engine and then with metro rail are scheduled to be conducted.

Subsequently, during the coming January 3rd or 4th week, the safety commissioner of Railways will visit and inspect the tracks and completed sections for a thorough safety check. Once the Safety checks conducted and the related certificate issued, with the permission of the Central and State Governments, the service in this section for the public is likely to start.

There are 2 underground stations and 6 elevated railway stations along this route.

Once the operations commence, it would be possible to travel from Thiruvotriyur via Anna Salai to the Chennai Airport straight and simple! It is expected that there would be 30% of passengers increase with this extended service.

To check the passengers’ items, special package scanners are to be set up and operated on a contract basis. Further, a workshop is to be set up in an area covering 48000 sq. m. in Wimco Nagar and this is expected to be completed by March. There is a proposal to construct a 20-storeyed building as well near this workshop. A railway pavement path will also be constructed for a distance of 9 km from Thiruvovotriyur Wimco Nagar to Washermanpet.
