On the orders of the National Green Tribunal, a four member panel inspected the Sterlite Copper Smelting Plant in Tuticorin. The inspections comes before the plant, which was shut down by the Tamil Nadu pollution Control Board (TNPCB), resumes operations.

The panel with the assistance of Member Secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board and Prof. Sai of IIT inspected the entire premises. They also measured the pollution level of the land, water and air in the area. The panel will conduct two more inspections before submitting a report to the Tribunal. The tribunal will then decide if the plant may be opened again.
