Now, user fee to be paid for garbage collection in Chennai

Gone are the days when the removal of garbage was done free of cost in Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC.

The news that has come out now is that beginning from 1st January 2021 the building owners within GCC would have to pay user fee for garbage removal to the civic body. This would be according to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2019. Earlier, it was said that this fee collection for the removal of garbage would begin from 1st April itself but it was postponed due to the lockdown for controlling the spread of Coronavirus pandemic. It was brought out by an official release from the Chennai Corporation commissioner Mr G. Prakash Solid Waste Management rules that the civic body drafter was approved by the state government through an order dated 10th January 2020. On  11th February, it was published in the Chennai district gazette.

User fee based on size and buildings usage:
It is worthy to mention here that as per the rules GCC would be collecting user charges based on the size and the usage of the buildings. An amount of Rs 10 per month would be paid for garbage removal by those residential buildings that have got a built up area of 500 sq ft.

The user fee for garbage removal for those buildings that have got a built up area from 501 sq ft to 1200 sq ft would be Rs 25. For buildings with built up area from 1200 sq ft to 2400 sq ft and for those above 2400 sq ft the use fee would be Rs 50 and Rs 100 respectively.

The amount that would have to be paid for removal of garbage in case of commercial establishments like schools, places of worship would be Rs 500 per month.

It is revealed that GCC would collect an amount of Rs 5000 to Rs 20,000 for those events that would be held in the open public spaces and on the number of persons taking part. This would not include funerals and other government based awareness activities etc. The owners of the buildings would have to pay the user charges only once in 6 months along with the property tax. Point is that the user charges would be calculated on a monthly basis. From the user charges, GCC would be getting an amount of Rs 60 crores to Rs 70 crores per year. This would be just a rough estimation by the official of GCC.
